Joint

Meaning in robotics & automation, with examples

/dʒɔɪnt/nounCore term

In robotics & automation, joint means: A connection between two parts of a robot arm that allows movement. A revolute joint rotates and a prismatic joint slides in a straight line; each joint is usually one axis.

In Turkish: eklem, mafsal

How it is used

Used in kinematics, programming and specifications. Joint angles, joint limits, joint speed and joint coordinates are common phrases. In programming, a 'joint move' means each axis goes directly to its target angle instead of following a straight line.

Example sentences

  1. Jog the robot in joint mode until the wrist is clear of the fixture.

  2. The joint limits are set in the controller, so the arm can't damage its own cables.
