Degrees of freedom

Meaning in robotics & automation, with examples

/dɪˈɡriːz əv ˈfriːdəm/nounCore term

In robotics & automation, degrees of freedom means: The number of independent ways a robot or a body can move. A typical industrial arm has six, enough to place its tool at a chosen position and orientation within its workspace.

In Turkish: serbestlik derecesi, hareket serbestliği

How it is used

Often written DOF or DoF and used with a number before a noun: a 6-DOF arm, a 7-DOF cobot. It appears in data sheets, lectures and design discussions. In industry people often say 'axes' with almost the same meaning: a six-axis robot.
