Collision detection

Meaning in robotics & automation, with examples

/kəˈlɪʒən dɪˌtekʃən/nounCommon term

In robotics & automation, collision detection means: A function in the robot controller that compares expected and actual motor torques and stops the robot quickly if it hits something unexpected.

In Turkish: çarpışma algılama, çarpışma tespiti

How it is used

Standard on most modern robots and essential on cobots. Engineers set its sensitivity: too high causes false stops, too low allows damage. It protects the robot and tooling, but on industrial robots it does not replace guarding for people.

Example sentences

  2. Collision detection keeps triggering on the fast moves; the payload data is probably wrong.
