In mobile app development, opt in means: To choose actively to take part in something, such as receiving notifications or sharing data; the opposite is to opt out.

How it is used

Used as a phrasal verb (opt in to notifications) and, with a hyphen, as a noun or adjective: the opt-in rate, an opt-in prompt. iOS and, since Android 13, Android need the user's permission for notifications, so teams track how many users opt in.
