Badge

Meaning in mobile app development, with examples

/bædʒ/nounCommon term

In mobile app development, badge means: A small number or dot shown on an app icon or a tab, usually in red, that tells users how many unread items or new notifications are waiting.

In Turkish: rozet, bildirim rozeti

How it is used

Developers set, update and clear the badge count, on iOS often from the push notification payload. On Android, notification dots on the icon depend on the launcher. Wrong badge counts that never clear are a common user complaint.

Example sentences

  1. The badge still shows 3 even after I read all my messages.

  2. Clear the badge when the user opens the notifications screen.
