SLA

Meaning in networking & telecommunications, with examples

/ˌes el ˈeɪ/abbreviationCommon term

In networking & telecommunications, SLA means: Short for service level agreement: the part of a contract in which a provider promises measurable service levels, such as uptime, repair time and latency, often with penalties if it fails.

In Turkish: hizmet seviyesi sözleşmesi, hizmet düzeyi anlaşması, SLA

How it is used

Spelled out letter by letter. Customers check whether the provider met or breached the SLA; operators track SLAs for every circuit. An SLA of 99.9% availability still allows almost nine hours of downtime a year; 99.99% allows less than an hour.

Example sentences

  1. The fibre was cut for six hours, which breaches the four-hour repair time in our SLA.

  2. Before signing, check what the SLA says about latency, not just uptime.

Common collocations

  • meet the SLA
  • breach the SLA
  • SLA penalty
