Enclosed space
Meaning in maritime & shipping, with examples
In maritime & shipping, enclosed space means: A space on a ship with limited openings and poor natural ventilation, such as a tank, cargo hold or void space, where the air may lack oxygen or contain toxic gas.
In Turkish: kapalı mahal
How it is used
Entry needs a permit to work, ventilation, gas testing and a standby person at the entrance. SOLAS requires enclosed space entry and rescue drills at least every two months, because many seafarers have died in such spaces.
Example sentences
No one may enter the enclosed space until the oxygen level has been tested.
The enclosed space entry permit was signed by the chief officer.
