Moderated testing

Meaning in UX/UI design, with examples

nounCommon term

In UX/UI design, moderated testing means: Usability testing in which a researcher guides each session live, in person or on a video call, giving tasks, asking questions and observing the participant.

In Turkish: moderatörlü test, yönetilen test

How it is used

The opposite is unmoderated testing, where participants complete tasks alone in an online tool while their screens are recorded. Moderated tests give richer insights; unmoderated tests are faster and cheaper at scale.
