Out of scope

Meaning in software engineering, with examples

phraseCommon term

In software engineering, out of scope means: Not part of the work that was agreed for a project, sprint or ticket, so it will not be done now, even if it is a good idea.

In Turkish: kapsam dışı, kapsamın dışında

How it is used

A polite way to say 'not now' in meetings, tickets and reviews: 'That's out of scope for this PR.' The opposite is 'in scope'. 'Scope creep' is when more and more work slowly gets added to a project.

Example sentences

  1. Good point, but changing the database is out of scope for this sprint.

  2. Mobile support is out of scope for the first version; we'll add it later.
