HDR

Meaning in photography, with examples

/ˌeɪtʃ diː ˈɑːr/abbreviationCommon term

In photography, HDR means: Short for high dynamic range: a technique that combines several photos taken at different exposures into one image with detail in both the shadows and the highlights.

In Turkish: HDR, yüksek dinamik aralık

How it is used

Widely used in real estate and interior photography. You bracket exposures and then merge them to HDR in software; phones do this automatically. Heavy HDR processing can look unnatural, with halos and gray skies, so many photographers aim for a natural look.

Example sentences

  1. For the hotel interiors we shoot three brackets and merge them to HDR.

  2. The HDR effect is too strong; the clouds look gray and dirty.
