Ingredient list

Meaning in food science & technology, with examples

nounCore term

In food science & technology, ingredient list means: The part of a food label that names all the ingredients, including additives, in descending order of weight at the time they were used.

In Turkish: içindekiler listesi, bileşen listesi

How it is used

It starts with the word 'Ingredients:'. Allergens are emphasized, for example in bold. When an ingredient appears in the product name or picture, EU and Turkish rules require its percentage (QUID), as in 'strawberries 30%'. Compound ingredients list their own components in brackets.

Example sentences

  1. Sugar is first in the ingredient list, so it is the main ingredient by weight.

  2. The supplier changed the chocolate chips, so the ingredient list on our cookies must change too.
