Offline programming

Meaning in robotics & automation, with examples

/ˌɔːfˈlaɪn ˈproʊɡræmɪŋ/nounCommon term

In robotics & automation, offline programming means: Writing and testing robot programs on a computer using a 3D simulation of the robot and its cell, instead of teaching points on the real robot with the pendant.

In Turkish: çevrimdışı programlama, offline programlama, simülasyonla programlama

How it is used

Shortened to OLP. Integrators use it to check reach, cycle time and collisions before the cell is built, and to prepare new programs without stopping production. Points usually need touching up on site, because the model never matches reality exactly.

Example sentences

  1. We did the whole welding program with offline programming, then touched up a few points on site.

  2. Offline programming showed that the robot would hit the column in the planned layout.
