Resistance band

Meaning in physiotherapy, with examples

nounCommon term

In physiotherapy, resistance band means: A long, stretchy rubber band used to add load to exercises; different colours usually show different levels of resistance.

In Turkish: direnç bandı, egzersiz bandı, elastik bant

How it is used

Very common in home exercise programmes because it is cheap and easy to carry. Patients often call it by a brand name or say 'the stretchy band'. To make an exercise harder, physiotherapists move patients to a stronger band or ask them to hold the band shorter.

Example sentences

  1. Loop the resistance band around the door handle and pull it towards your waist.

  2. You can move up to the green resistance band next week.
