Work triangle

Meaning in interior design, with examples

/ˈwɜːk ˌtraɪæŋɡəl/nounCommon term

In interior design, work triangle means: The imaginary triangle between the sink, the hob and the fridge in a kitchen, used as a guide so that the cook can move between them easily.

In Turkish: çalışma üçgeni, mutfak üçgeni

How it is used

A classic rule of kitchen planning: each side should be neither too short nor too long, and no main route should cut through the triangle. In modern open-plan kitchens with islands, many designers talk about work zones instead.

Example sentences

  1. Moving the fridge to the other wall makes the work triangle much more compact.

  2. The kitchen looks great, but the door to the garden cuts right through the work triangle.

Common collocations
