Partition wall

Meaning in interior design, with examples

/pɑːˈtɪʃən wɔːl/nounCommon term

In interior design, partition wall means: A non-structural internal wall that divides a space into smaller rooms or areas, often made of plasterboard on a metal or timber frame, or of glass.

In Turkish: bölme duvar, ara bölme, alçıpan bölme

How it is used

Common in office fit-outs and flat conversions because it can be built and removed fairly easily. Designers specify its acoustic rating and finish; glazed partitions let light flow between spaces. In the US people often say drywall partition.

Example sentences

  1. We'll add a glass partition wall to create a meeting room without losing daylight.

  2. The partition wall needs acoustic insulation, because the bedroom is next to the TV room.
