Grout

Meaning in interior design, with examples

/ɡraʊt/nounCommon term

In interior design, grout means: The paste that fills the joints between tiles and then hardens, keeping water out and holding the tiles in place; also a verb meaning to fill these joints.

In Turkish: derz dolgusu, fuga, derz

How it is used

Designers specify the grout colour and joint width, because both change how tiles look: matching grout looks calm, contrasting grout shows off the pattern. Epoxy grout resists stains better than standard cement-based grout and is used in kitchens and showers.

Example sentences

  1. Use a dark grey grout on the floor so it doesn't look dirty after a month.

  2. The tiler will grout the shower walls tomorrow.
