In industrial engineering & manufacturing, 5S means: A workplace organization method with five steps: sort, set in order, shine, standardize and sustain. It keeps work areas clean, tidy and easy to manage.

How it is used

Often the first lean tool a plant introduces. Teams implement 5S in an area, run 5S audits and post scores on boards. The steps come from Japanese words starting with S (seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu, shitsuke). Some companies add safety as a sixth S.
