SMED
Meaning in industrial engineering & manufacturing, with examples
In industrial engineering & manufacturing, SMED means: Short for single-minute exchange of die: a method for cutting changeover time to under ten minutes by doing as much setup work as possible while the machine is still running.
In Turkish: tek dakikada kalıp değişimi, hızlı ürün değişimi
How it is used
Developed by Shigeo Shingo. The key idea is to separate internal setup (possible only when the machine is stopped) from external setup (possible while it runs), then turn internal work into external work. Teams usually run a SMED workshop on one machine at a time.
Example sentences
After the SMED workshop, mold changes on the injection machine went from 75 to 18 minutes.
Using SMED, we moved die preheating outside the changeover.
