Throw-in

Meaning in football (soccer), with examples

/ˈθroʊ ɪn/nounCore term

In football (soccer), throw-in means: The restart when the ball crosses a touchline: a player from the team that did not touch it last throws it in with both hands from behind and over the head.

In Turkish: taç atışı, taç

How it is used

Teams win, take or concede a throw-in. A long throw-in can be as dangerous as a corner. If the technique is wrong, the referee gives a foul throw and the other team takes it. A goal cannot be scored directly from a throw-in, and there is no offside from one.
