Beat expectations
Meaning in economics, with examples
In economics, beat expectations means: To be better or higher than economists and markets had predicted, used for data such as growth, jobs or company profits.
In Turkish: beklentileri aşmak, beklentilerin üzerinde gelmek
How it is used
Data are compared with the consensus forecast, the average of economists' predictions. Figures beat, meet or miss expectations, or come in above or below expectations. For inflation a higher figure is bad news, so reporters usually say above expectations instead.
Example sentences
GDP growth beat expectations, rising 1.1% in the third quarter.
The company's profits beat expectations despite weak sales.
