Exponential backoff
Meaning in software engineering, with examples
In software engineering, exponential backoff means: A retry strategy that increases the waiting interval by a multiplying factor after successive failures, often up to a limit.
In Turkish: üstel geri çekilme
How it is used
Used for temporary failures and overload. Random variation is often added to stop clients retrying together.
Example sentences
The client uses exponential backoff after repeated temporary connection failures.
Each failure increases the next wait rather than immediately repeating the request.
We capped exponential backoff at thirty seconds and added random jitter.
The cap limits delay, while jitter spreads retries across clients.
