Anchor tenant
Meaning in real estate, with examples
In real estate, anchor tenant means: A large, well-known tenant, such as a supermarket or department store, that draws visitors to a shopping centre and helps attract smaller tenants.
In Turkish: lokomotif kiracı, ana kiracı, çapa kiracı
How it is used
Used in retail and mixed-use development. Developers sign anchor tenants early, often at lower rents per square metre, because they make the rest of the space easier to lease. Losing an anchor can hurt the whole centre.
Example sentences
The new supermarket will be the anchor tenant of the shopping centre.
Since the anchor tenant left, footfall has dropped by a third.
