/ˌɪntrəˈvinəs/adjectiveCore term

In pharmacy & pharmacology, intravenous means: Given directly into a vein, either as a quick injection or as a slow infusion, so that the medicine reaches the bloodstream at once.

In Turkish: damar içi, intravenöz, IV

How it is used

Usually shortened to IV in writing and speech ('IV antibiotics', 'switch from IV to oral'). Hospital pharmacists check IV doses, the compatibility of mixtures and infusion rates. A quick IV injection is a bolus; a slow one is an infusion or, informally in the UK, a drip.

  2. When a drug is given intravenously, its bioavailability is 100 percent by definition.
