Trip

Meaning in oil, gas & mining, with examples

/trɪp/verbCommon term

In oil, gas & mining, trip means: To pull the drill string out of the well or run it back in, for example to change a worn bit or a tool. The whole operation is called a trip.

In Turkish: manevra yapmak, diziyi kuyudan çekmek veya indirmek

How it is used

Rig crews say trip out (POOH, pull out of hole) and trip in (RIH, run in hole). Tripping takes many hours on deep wells and is a risky time for well control, so the trip tank is watched closely. A round trip means out and back in again.

Example sentences

  1. We tripped out to change the bit at 2,800 metres.

  2. While tripping out, the driller noticed that the hole was taking less mud than expected.
