Visual weight

Meaning in interior design, with examples

/ˌvɪʒuəl ˈweɪt/nounCommon term

In interior design, visual weight means: How heavy or light an object looks, whatever its real weight; dark colours, solid bases, large size and bold patterns all add visual weight.

In Turkish: görsel ağırlık

How it is used

Used when explaining balance and furniture choices: a sofa on legs has less visual weight than one that sits directly on the floor, and glass or open shelving looks lighter than solid wood. Small rooms benefit from pieces with little visual weight.

Example sentences

  1. The dark wardrobe has a lot of visual weight, so let's balance it with a large painting on the opposite wall.

  2. A glass coffee table adds almost no visual weight to the small living room.
