Production line

Meaning in food science & technology, with examples

nounCore term

In food science & technology, production line means: A connected series of machines and work stations through which a product moves step by step from raw material to packed finished goods.

How it is used

In everyday factory talk people just say 'the line': start up the line, stop the line, line speed, line changeover. Supervisors track output, downtime and efficiency (OEE) for each line. A 'line clearance' check removes the previous product's labels and packaging before a new product starts.

Example sentences

  1. We had to stop the production line for two hours because the labeler broke down.

  2. The new production line can fill 12,000 bottles an hour.
