Landfill

Meaning in environment & climate, with examples

/ˈlændfɪl/nounCore term

In environment & climate, landfill means: A site where waste is buried in the ground in a controlled way, usually with a lining and systems to collect leachate and landfill gas.

In Turkish: düzenli depolama sahası, çöp depolama alanı

How it is used

Used as a noun (a landfill, send waste to landfill) and before other nouns (landfill gas, landfill tax, landfill site). Diverting waste from landfill is a key goal of waste policy, because landfills take up land and produce methane. An uncontrolled site is called an open dump.
