SMD
Meaning in electrical & electronics engineering, with examples
In electrical & electronics engineering, SMD means: Short for surface-mount device: a component soldered directly onto pads on the surface of a PCB, without leads going through holes. The technology is called SMT.
In Turkish: SMD, yüzey montaj eleman
How it is used
Used in PCB design and assembly. SMD parts come in package sizes such as 0402, 0603 and 0805 (imperial codes), are placed by pick-and-place machines and are soldered in a reflow oven. The alternative is through-hole (THT) components.
Example sentences
All the passives are 0402 SMD parts, which are hard to solder by hand.
We moved from through-hole to SMD components to make the board smaller.
