Commit

Meaning in databases & SQL, with examples

/kəˈmɪt/verbCore term

In databases & SQL, commit means: To end a transaction and make all of its changes permanent, so that other sessions can see them and they survive a crash.

In Turkish: onaylamak, kalıcı hale getirmek, commit etmek

How it is used

Also a noun: 'after the commit'. Many tools work in autocommit mode, where every statement is committed automatically. In a manual transaction, forgetting to commit means your changes are lost or still holding locks. Do not mix it up with a Git commit.

Example sentences

  1. I ran the update but forgot to commit, so nobody else could see the new prices.

  2. The changes are committed only after both inserts succeed.

Common collocations
