Proof of stake

Meaning in blockchain & crypto, with examples

/ˌpruːf əv ˈsteɪk/nounCore term

In blockchain & crypto, proof of stake means: A consensus mechanism in which validators lock up coins as a stake to win the right to propose and confirm blocks. Those who break the rules can lose part of their stake. It uses far less energy than proof of work.

In Turkish: hisse ispatı, pay ispatı

How it is used

Shortened to PoS. Used together with staking, validators and slashing (the penalty for breaking rules). Ethereum and many newer networks use proof of stake. As with PoW, add hyphens before a noun: a proof-of-stake network.

  2. The new chain launched with proof of stake from day one.
