Proximity sensor

Meaning in robotics & automation, with examples

/prɑːkˈsɪməti ˌsensər/nounCore term

In robotics & automation, proximity sensor means: A sensor that detects an object near it without touching it. Inductive types detect metal; capacitive types also detect plastic, wood or liquids.

In Turkish: yaklaşım sensörü, endüktif sensör, proximity sensör

How it is used

Found on almost every machine, often just called a prox or prox switch. Engineers mention the sensing distance, the PNP or NPN output and the LED that lights when the sensor switches. It confirms parts, cylinder positions and machine home points.

Example sentences

  1. The proximity sensor on the clamp is too far from the target, so it only switches now and then.

  2. Use an inductive proximity sensor there; the part is steel.
