Line of best fit
Meaning in physics, with examples
In physics, line of best fit means: A straight line or smooth curve drawn on a graph so that it passes as close as possible to all the plotted points, showing the overall trend of the data.
In Turkish: en uygun doğru, en iyi uyum doğrusu
How it is used
Students draw it by eye or with software (least-squares fitting), then use its gradient and intercept to find physical quantities. Never just join the dots. Points far from the line may be anomalous results that need checking.
Example sentences
Draw a line of best fit and use its gradient to find the spring constant.
The line of best fit does not pass through the origin, which suggests a zero error.
Common collocations
