Free-body diagram

Meaning in physics, with examples

nounCore term

In physics, free-body diagram means: A simple sketch of one object with labelled arrows for all the forces acting on it, each drawn in its own direction. It is the usual first step in solving a forces problem.

In Turkish: serbest cisim diyagramı, kuvvet diyagramı

How it is used

Teachers say 'start with a free-body diagram' or 'draw the FBD'. Only forces acting on the chosen object appear, never the forces it exerts on other things. Typical labels: W or mg (weight), N (normal force), T (tension), f (friction).

Example sentences

  1. Draw a free-body diagram for the box on the ramp before you write any equations.

  2. Your free-body diagram is missing the friction force acting up the slope.
