Endpoint

Meaning in pharmacy & pharmacology, with examples

/ˈɛndˌpɔɪnt/nounAdvanced term

In pharmacy & pharmacology, endpoint means: The main outcome a clinical trial measures to decide whether a treatment works, such as survival, the number of heart attacks or a change in blood pressure.

In Turkish: sonlanım noktası, son nokta, sonlanım ölçütü

How it is used

Trials have a primary endpoint, chosen in advance, and secondary endpoints. A surrogate endpoint is a measurement, such as cholesterol or blood pressure, used instead of a clinical outcome like heart attacks, which takes longer to appear. A trial 'meets' or 'misses' its primary endpoint.

Example sentences

  1. The trial met its primary endpoint, a reduction in hospital admissions for heart failure.

  2. Blood pressure is only a surrogate endpoint; what really matters is fewer strokes.
