Section view

Meaning in mechanical engineering, with examples

nounCommon term

In mechanical engineering, section view means: A view on a drawing that shows a part as if it were cut along a plane, so that inner features such as holes, grooves and walls can be seen clearly.

In Turkish: kesit görünüş, kesit

How it is used

Used on drawings and in CAD. The cutting plane is shown with a line and arrows labeled A-A, and the cut surfaces are filled with hatching. A section view is added when hidden lines would make the drawing hard to read. Also called a cross-section.

Example sentences

  1. Add a section view through the bearing seat so the machinist can see the groove.

  2. Section view B-B shows the wall thickness of the casting.
