F of x
Meaning in mathematics, with examples
In mathematics, f of x means: The usual spoken form of f(x), the output of a function f when the input is x; for example, if f(x) = x + 5, then 'f of 2' is 7.
In Turkish: f x, f(x)
How it is used
Teachers and students say it all the time: 'f of x equals x squared', 'g of three', and 'f of g of x' for f(g(x)). The derivative f′(x) is read 'f prime of x' and the inverse f⁻¹(x) is read 'f inverse of x'.
