Role-based access control

Meaning in cybersecurity, with examples

nounCommon term

In cybersecurity, role-based access control means: A way of managing permissions in which rights are given to roles, such as 'accountant' or 'admin', and users get access by being assigned to a role.

In Turkish: rol tabanlı erişim kontrolü, RBAC

How it is used

Called RBAC, pronounced 'ar-back'. It makes access reviews easier because auditors check roles instead of individual permissions. A frequent problem is 'role creep', when users collect roles over time and keep access they no longer need.

Example sentences

  1. With role-based access control, new nurses get the right permissions on day one.

  2. We are redesigning the role-based access control model for the cloud accounts.
