SNMP

Meaning in networking & telecommunications, with examples

abbreviationAdvanced term

In networking & telecommunications, SNMP means: Short for Simple Network Management Protocol: a protocol that lets monitoring systems collect information such as traffic, errors and temperature from network devices, and lets devices send alerts.

In Turkish: Basit Ağ Yönetim Protokolü, SNMP

How it is used

Spelled out letter by letter. Monitoring tools poll devices with SNMP, and devices send SNMP traps when something happens, such as a link going down. Versions 1 and 2c use a shared 'community string'; SNMPv3 adds authentication and encryption and is the safer choice.

Example sentences

  1. The new switches aren't in the monitoring system yet because SNMP isn't configured.

  2. We received an SNMP trap saying the fan in rack 4 has failed.
