Routing table

Meaning in networking & telecommunications, with examples

nounCommon term

In networking & telecommunications, routing table means: A list stored in a router or host that shows which networks it knows about and where to send packets for each one, such as the next router or an outgoing interface.

In Turkish: yönlendirme tablosu, routing tablosu

How it is used

Engineers check or display the routing table when traffic doesn't arrive: 'Is the route in the routing table?' A route can be missing from, added to or removed from the table. The default route is used when no more specific route matches.

Example sentences

  1. The 10.30.0.0/16 network isn't in the routing table, so the router drops that traffic.

  2. After the OSPF change, the routing table on the core router has twice as many entries.
