Failover

Meaning in networking & telecommunications, with examples

/ˈfeɪləʊvər/nounCommon term

In networking & telecommunications, failover means: Automatic switching to a backup device, link or system when the main one fails, so that the service continues with little or no interruption.

In Turkish: yük devretme, yedeğe geçiş, failover

How it is used

'Failover' is the noun and 'fail over' the verb: 'The firewall failed over to the secondary.' Engineers configure, test and trigger failover; returning to the primary afterwards is called failback. A failover test in a maintenance window shows whether redundancy really works.
