CIDR

Meaning in networking & telecommunications, with examples

/ˈsaɪdər/abbreviationAdvanced term

In networking & telecommunications, CIDR means: Short for Classless Inter-Domain Routing: the system of writing an IP network as an address plus a prefix length, such as 192.168.0.0/22, which replaced the old fixed address classes.

In Turkish: CIDR, CIDR gösterimi, sınıfsız alanlar arası yönlendirme

How it is used

Usually said like the drink 'cider'. Engineers use CIDR notation everywhere: in firewall rules, routing tables and cloud network settings. The number after the slash shows how many bits belong to the network: a /24 has 256 addresses, a /30 has four.

Example sentences

  1. Write the subnet in CIDR notation, for example 10.10.0.0/16, not with the full mask.

  2. The cloud team asked for a /20 CIDR block for the new environment.
