NMR
Meaning in chemistry, with examples
In chemistry, NMR means: Short for nuclear magnetic resonance: a method that places a sample in a strong magnetic field and uses radio waves to show how the hydrogen or carbon atoms in a molecule are arranged.
In Turkish: NMR, nükleer manyetik rezonans spektroskopisi
How it is used
The main structure-checking tool in organic labs. You run or take an NMR, a proton (¹H) or carbon (¹³C) NMR, dissolve the sample in a deuterated solvent such as CDCl₃, and discuss peaks, chemical shifts and integration.
Example sentences
The proton NMR shows a three-proton singlet at 2.1 ppm, typical of a methyl ketone.
Can you run an NMR of the crude product before we purify it?
Common collocations
- proton NMR
- carbon-13 NMR
- run an NMR
- NMR spectrum
- NMR tube
