How to write numbers in words
- Hyphens from 21 to 99: thirty-seven, eighty-two. No hyphen after hundred, thousand or million: two hundred, five thousand.
- No plural -s: three hundred, two million, not three hundreds. The plural only appears without a number: hundreds of people.
- "And" in British English: one hundred and five, two thousand and twenty. American English usually says one hundred five.
- Group by thousands: read each group of three digits and add its name: 3,450,210 = three million, four hundred and fifty thousand, two hundred and ten.
- Decimals digit by digit: 3.75 = three point seven five; 0.5 = zero point five (or nought point five in British English).
Thirteen or thirty?
The -teen and -ty numbers are the classic listening trap. In thirTEEN the stress is on the end and the vowel is long; in THIRty the stress is at the start and the ending is short. Listen to both in the converter, then try the listening quiz: it always starts with a -teen and a -ty number.
| -teen | -ty |
|---|---|
| 13 thirteen | 30 thirty |
| 14 fourteen | 40 forty (no u) |
| 15 fifteen | 50 fifty |
| 16 sixteen | 60 sixty |
| 17 seventeen | 70 seventy |
| 18 eighteen | 80 eighty |
| 19 nineteen | 90 ninety |
Ordinal numbers: first, second, third…
Ordinals show order. Most add -th (fourth, sixth, hundredth), but a few change: first, second, third, fifth, eighth, ninth, twelfth, and the tens change -y to -ieth (twentieth, fiftieth). In bigger numbers only the last word changes: twenty-first, one hundred and second. Short forms use the last two letters of the word: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 21st, 112th.
