In web development, sitemap means: A file, usually sitemap.xml, that lists the pages of a website so that search engines can find and crawl them more easily.

How it is used

Developers generate sitemaps automatically, list them in robots.txt and submit them in tools such as Google Search Console. Large sites split them into several files with a sitemap index.
