Stratified sampling
Meaning in statistics, with examples
In statistics, stratified sampling means: A sampling method in which the population is first divided into subgroups (strata), such as regions or age groups, and a random sample is then taken from each one.
In Turkish: tabakalı örnekleme
How it is used
Used when every important subgroup must be properly represented. Sampling can be proportional to each stratum's size, or small groups can be oversampled, which then requires weighting. Singular 'stratum', plural 'strata'.
Example sentences
We used stratified sampling by region so that all seven regions of Türkiye were represented.
Stratified sampling gave us more precise estimates than a simple random sample of the same size.
Common collocations
- stratified random sampling
