Histogram

Meaning in statistics, with examples

/ˈhɪstəɡræm/nounCore term

In statistics, histogram means: A chart of touching bars showing how many observations of a numeric variable fall into each interval, called a bin.

In Turkish: histogram, sıklık grafiği

How it is used

Used to check the shape of a distribution: symmetry, skewness, peaks and gaps. The chosen bin width can change the picture a lot. Unlike a bar chart, the x-axis is a numeric scale, so there are no gaps between the bars.

Example sentences

  1. The histogram of delivery times has a long tail to the right.

  2. Try a narrower bin width; this histogram hides too much detail.

Common collocations

  • plot a histogram
  • bin width
