Semaphore
Meaning in software engineering, with examples
In software engineering, semaphore means: A synchronization mechanism with a count that controls how many tasks may access a resource or proceed at once.
In Turkish: semafor
How it is used
Used to limit concurrent work or signal availability. A counting semaphore can allow more than one task, unlike a mutex.
Example sentences
A semaphore limits the image processor to four simultaneous downloads.
Each download needs a permit, so additional tasks wait when all four are in use.
The worker releases the semaphore even when decoding the file fails.
Returning the permit prevents a failed task from permanently reducing available capacity.
Common collocations
- counting semaphore
- acquire a semaphore
