Replay attack

Meaning in software engineering, with examples

nounAdvanced term

In software engineering, replay attack means: An attack that resends a previously valid message to make a system accept an action that is no longer authorized or intended.

In Turkish: yeniden oynatma saldırısı

How it is used

Used in authentication and protocol reviews. Encryption alone does not necessarily prove that a message is fresh.

Example sentences

  1. The review found that an old signed request could still succeed in a replay attack.

A valid signature verifies the message but does not automatically rule out reuse.

  2. The server rejected the reused challenge response during the replay attack test.

Tracking challenge use prevents an old response from being accepted as a new exchange.

Common collocations

  • prevent a replay attack
