Machine vision

Meaning in robotics & automation, with examples

/məˈʃiːn ˈvɪʒən/nounCommon term

In robotics & automation, machine vision means: The use of cameras, lighting and image processing software so that machines can inspect parts, read codes, measure or locate objects and guide robots.

In Turkish: makine görmesi, görüntü işleme sistemi, endüstriyel görüntü işleme

How it is used

Common in quality inspection and robot guidance (vision-guided robots). People say 'the vision system' or just 'vision': 'vision found the part', 'vision failed'. Getting the lighting right is often the hardest part. Both 2D and 3D vision are used.

Example sentences

  1. Machine vision checks every label before the box leaves the line.

  2. The parts arrive in random positions, so we need machine vision to guide the robot.
