Energy level
Meaning in physics, with examples
In physics, energy level means: One of the fixed amounts of energy that an electron in an atom is allowed to have. Electrons move between levels by absorbing or emitting photons.
In Turkish: enerji seviyesi, enerji düzeyi
How it is used
The lowest level is the ground state and higher ones are excited states. Energies are often given in electronvolts as negative values, for example −13.6 eV for the ground state of hydrogen. Transitions between levels produce line spectra.
Example sentences
An electron falling from the n = 3 to the n = 2 energy level in hydrogen gives off red light.
Each element has its own set of energy levels, so each one produces its own line spectrum.
